Master Carl Martin began training in the art of Isshinryu Karate in 1968 at the age of 15 under Grand Master Willie Adams in Highland Park, Michigan. After attending Eastern Michigan University, Master Martin was promoted to Sho Dan in November 1978 by Grand Master Willie Adams in Detroit, Michigan and promoted to Hachi Dan (8h Degree Black Belt) in July 2010 by Grand Master Willie Adams.  


 

Master Martin is on the Board of Directors for the Isshinryu Hall of Fame (IHOF). He is also a member of Karate International Association of Isshinryu (KIAI), a member of the Okinawa Isshinryu Karate Kobu-Do Association and the International Federation of Shinkendo. In August of 2003, Master Martin was bestowed the honor of being inducted into the Isshinryu Karate Hall of Fame and was selected "Sensei of Sensei"He was inducted into the Pennsylvania Karate Hall of Fame in October 1998 and the IOKKA Hall of Fame in 2000. In addition, he is the recipient of the AOKA "Spirit of Isshinryu" award (1997) and recognized by the AOKA as "Instructor of the Year"(1994) and hosted the 1999 25th Annual AOKA Isshinryu World Karate Championship.

Master Martin established the Traditional Okinawan Karate Institute (TOKI) in 1983 in Norristown, Pennsylvania and relocated the school to West Chester, Pennsylvania in 1990 where it currently resides. A satellite location was established at the Delco Training Gym in Woodlyn, Pennsylvania in 1994. Master Martin has expanded Isshinryu Karate by teaching an Introduction to Martial Arts Course, which is a fully accredited college elective at Widener University in Chester, Pennsylvania and Neumann College in Aston, Pennsylvania. He instructs an on going self-defense courses at the West Chester Area Night School and Garnet Valley Night School. He has dedicated many charitable hours of instructing martial arts classes to non-profit organizations such as the Police Athletic League of West Chester, PA, Chester County Salvation Army and the Chester County Family Academy, a Pennsylvania Charter School, for 1st and 2nd grade children which is dedicated to assisting under privileged children become self-sufficient, education advocates. The program focuses on a child’s need to feel self-satisfaction through work.

Master Martin has competed extensively in the eastern United States, most notably winning Grand Championships in Kumite, Kata, Weapons and Self-Defense. A few of these include: Orlando World Championship Team Fighting Grand Champion – Detroit team, 1978; North American Karate Championships Kumite Grand Champion, 1979; New Jersey Open Karate Tournament Black Belt Kumite Champion, 1980; Lake Erie Shore Open Karate Tournament Heavy Weight Black Belt Kumite Champion, 1986; 17th Annual AOKA Grand Nationals Kata and Weapons Champion, 1991; and May Day Mayhem Tournament Kata and Self-Defense Grand Champion. He coached the 1989 Delaware Classics Youth Division Team Kata Champions and the 1998 & 1999 AOKA Kumite Grand Champion as well as other national champions.

  
Grand Master Willie Adams

Grand Master Willie Adams long and colorful history as one of the most prominent and respected martial artists in America began in the late 1950's and early 1960's, when he earned his Black Belt in Isshinryu Karate under Masters Don Nagle, James Chapman and Doug Noxon. In addition, Master Adams also had the opportunity to study other martial arts, including Shotokan under Master Ozaki, Kung Fu under Masters Lee and Wong, Aikido under Master Yusuda, Judo under Master John Osako, and the arts of Quan Tao and Poke Lon under Master Phil Reeders.

His complete dedication to the martial arts laid the groundwork for a stellar tournament career, spanning the years 1963-1975. Always a fierce, topnotch competitor, highlights of Master Adams' accomplishments include winning several Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio and Pennsylvania State Championships in the weapons and empty-hand kata, kumite and breaking divisions. He won the 1966 International Karate Championship Black Belt kumite division, and was also a member of the United States International Karate Team in 1964. He was an outstanding coach as well. In the 1970's, as Captain of the Detroit All-Stars Karate Team, he led his fighters to two years of undefeated success in tournaments throughout the East Coast and Midwest. In 1972, his team competed against Chuck Norris' team to a draw for the title of United States Team Champions.


Master Willie Adams

Master Adams is also involved in the administrative side of the martial arts. He was a member of Grandmaster Shimabuku's first, original organization, the Okinawan American Karate Association (OAKA). Later, he became the state representative, then the regional representative, Vice-President, and finally President of the American Okinawan Karate Association (AOKA). As a result of his unflagging dedication to and high level of achievement in the Art of Isshinryu Karate, Master Adams has received many honors, including induction into the International Karate Hall of Fame, the Isshinryu Hall of Fame, the Michigan Karate Hall of Fame the Spirit of Isshinryu Award. Most recently, he was inducted into the International Afro-American Sports Hall of Fame, an honor of which he is very proud.

Master Adams has also owned and operated a number of successful businesses outside of the dojo, including a limousine service, the Worldwide Import/Export Company, Renaissance Security Investigation Company and Panther Brand Karate Uniform Company.

Master Adams was recognized by Grand Master Harold Mitchum as 10th degree black belt in June 2008 at the Don Bohan/Rick Niemira Memorial Tournament in Fredericksburg, Virginia.  Today, he owns one of the most successful Karate schools in Michigan, trains all of the major police departments in the area, including the Wayne County Sheriff's Department, the Detroit and the Southfield Police Department and several other law enforcement agencies. He is licensed by the State of Michigan as a private investigator, and is also active in the Southfield Police Department D. A R. E. program, developed to keep kids off of drugs.

Master Adams was born on January 20th,1946, and he was educated at Southeastern High School, Cass Technical High School, Highland Park Community College and Wayne State University.
